Are any of your hubs on first page of Google for your search term? I am trying to break into this category but nothing yet....thinking maybe I have to go into a micro niche hub and write about that...less competition....What do you all think?
I've got a couple on the first page of Google. They are pretty nichey though. Okay, they are extremely nichey.... probably too nichey for any real income potential. Still they help people who need the info.
Which category? Browse of your profile says you got stuff in multiple categories, and some of them are pretty saturated, like "making money"
I think a big key is knowing the audience you want to target. Who are you writing for? Write with that audience in your mind when you're crafting your hub. What do they want to read and see on the page. Are they scanners or readers? Do they like detailed info or tidbits of info. Are you an authority on your topic? Do you use your own unique voice? I think if you write in that manner, you'll find some of your hubs make it to page 1. I have a few. I'll read Terry's hub.
Use the scroogle scraper on scroogle.org ..It provides you with google results 100 at a time. Do ctrl+F and look for your website address - check if it shows up anywhere in the top 100-500.
I have quite a few on page 1 and this leads me to believe it is individual efforts to rank hubs and there is no Google penalty.
I just wrote a hub on How To Check Your Hubpage Rankings On Search Engines that you might find interesting.
And though it only has a 60 Hub Score, it was number one on Google for that search term!
Yes, I have one which is second for a big search term and I don't get a penalty
The category, niche or keywords that you choose to target are obviously important. The only problem with this is that, unless you have come up with a keyword that is not mentioned anywhere on the internet, you will always have competition.
Having relevant links that point towards your individual hubs is how you actually make it to the first result or even the first page for a key term that has even the smallest potential for income. Most of the hubs I have lean towards teaching people on Hubpages the same information that I use to generate income through web ownership and perform SEO services, so check em out.
In a nutshell, what you should do is choose a topic that has a relatively low level of competition, or whose competition only consists of bloggers, hubbers and similar informative websites, or web pages that have a small linking base and low pagerank.
You won't become the first result by simply writing the article. After your article is as good as it can possibly be, start building links for yourself by posting guest posts on blogs and informative websites with links in the articles. Alternatively, you can also contact webmasters directly and see if they are willing to link to your article - good luck with that one though.
Hope this helps. Let me know if your curious about anything else, I would like to create some more hubs to answer some of the questions I have yet to cover.
I have at least five hubs that are on the first page listed as the first result. They took some key word tittle research but they have been the number 1 on the first page since their inception....
Keep an eye on your analytics account as well. Traffic sources > keywords is where you want to go on Google analytics I believe. You might be ranking for sets of keywords that were not necessarily the exact ones you were targeting.
If you are able to rank as the top or one of the most relevant results for a search term that includes certain keywords or is a cousin (similar) keyword, it makes it easier for your hub to move up for the more direct keywords you were targeting.
Example: "cheese spray" might get alot of search results and would be great if you could be the top result, but you aren't even after writing an article that targets that keyword. If, however, you start to appear as the most relevant result for easier key terms like "cheese spray in bulk" etc., you will find that you will actually begin to move up in rank for the shorter "cheese spray" key term as well because you are already a relevant result for a cousin keyword.
This does not work in the sense that you write a separate hub so much, but simply including keyword focus in the same hub or webpage on the easier cousins of your keyword will really make a difference, especially if you then build a link base for these key terms as well.
I have a few but I chose the keywords because they were low competition. They're not high traffic keyword either.
My most successful hubs are on page 1, but it depends on if you type in the entire keyword phrase, or just part of it.

I joined hubpages one month ago and started writing hubs on weekends because I am very busy on working days. I have published 12-13 hubs right now and they are featured (12 of them while the 13th is still under review). Though my score on each hub is above 50 but I am seeing no traffic coming on my...
