I'm not really sure what the red number is for when I start a Hub.  I noticed on the first couple I did, the score started out at 50, but on the last on it started out at 64.
Can someone explain that to me?

    Thanks!

It is the hubscore.  You can read about it here: http://hubpages.com/faq/#hubscore

That is the quality score for your page. When you first create a page, its score is usually 45-50. If your personal score is higher than that, then over time the score of that page will rise, even if you don't put a single word on it, because pages by quality writers get a bonus to their quality score. If you leave it overnight before you publish it, you will see this effect in action.

Likewise, the average quality score of your pages influences your personal score.

Apart from that, there are two factors which affect the individual Hub's score - what is on the page, and the amount of traffic it gets.

Longer Hubs with more types of content (pictures, video, links, rss feeds, etc) get a higher score. Your unpublished Hub might score anything up to 75 on the basis of its content and your personal score, but to get the higher scores it needs to get traffic.

I had a Hub sitting around for a few weeks in the low 60s (http://hubpages.com/hub/Goddess-Answers - it is on an obscure form of spirituality, so it didn't get much search engine traffic), then a couple of days ago someone influential bookmarked it at StumbleUpon. I got almost 200 visits in a day, and today it is scoring 82!

That score won't hold, though, unless the traffic keeps up.

Individual Hub scores and your personal Hubber Score vary all the time over a range of at least 5 points, too.
