   muslims and christians believe in second coming of christ...though it means different thing for both of them...jews are waiting for their messiah to come...hindus are waiting for 10th and final avtaar of vishnu to come...

      Because if there isn't anything else that is going to happen, the religion is essentially complete, making it vulnerable to replacement by a "living" religion that still has some divine engagement with us Earthlings to come. Building this into a religion lets each new generation get to hope they might get to be part of some significant final event, since, obviously, they already missed the divine season opener in which the characters in the originating myths got to have a role.
      
      Nobody wants to be part of the unimportant time. So, though it seems crazy, religious people have an ironic desire to be there when the world as we know it ends. It means they matter. That's why so many people like religion so much, or at least its a huge part of why. It lets them hope their lives matter in some "big" way.

      I would gather to say the same reason many in the scientific 'faith' are waiting for a alien return, asteroid bombardment and such. Humanity is obsessed with death and destruction since his mind took hold of his ability to exist immortally. That holding dislodged said ability and down into the depths of chaos man went.
      
      The messiah of Judaism comes as a king. Only then can Is Ra El be restored to a monarchy and their belief system, which is immortalized around the temple and law, completed, removing both burdens from them.
      The messiah of Christianity has already come and gone, leaving behind specifically the unification of Creator with humanity again, via the Spirit -or Creators ruach {power of life}. This is the most controversial of messianic presentations. If true, then immortality is readily available, there is no death and there will be no second [or third] coming. The messiah of Islam is not well known to me, so cannot comment on that one.
      
      In all three [major] theologies, the desire for a "replacement" or "intervention" is evident. Man believes himself so lost, so weak, so inept to himself and the vast universe, nothing else could possibly raise them up out of the trenches of this world view [slavery to economics, etc] and mentality, than a messiah.
      
      To believe the messiahs will return gives power or hope to them, so they believe. In my opinion, 2nd//3rd comings do nothing less than distract them from the purpose of the original belief in salvation and the messianic point. Meanwhile the burden is put afar off, upon the shoulders of another ,and extends said hope as far as possible. Hope that --in some beliefs-- extends into something called afterlife. since hope cannot be measured, it becomes indisputable and therefore establishes the afar. But, as I have often asked: What is there after Life? If life is the ultimate expression of creation -in the ultimate expression of a creation [called human] then only life can exist in the human, else he dies and life ends.

      I guess its because the World we live in can be so crap for multitudes of people that the potential 2nd/3rd coming of a Messiah figure brings hope that one day all this will be over. It can also be used by religious leaders as a method for controlling people and keeping them in line if sai Messiah figure comes with divine judgement.

   The Jatravartid people believe that the Universe was sneezed out of the nose of a being called the Great Green Arkleseizure. They live in perpetual fear of the time they call "The Coming of the Great White Handkerchief"
   
   It seems many are linked to a type of Armageddon, the end of their physical subsistence and the beginning of an eternal spiritual non-existence.
