Hydroponics is a branch of agriculture where you grow plants in water instead of in dirt. There are a bunch of different types of hydroponics, but plants get more yield, have less problems with disease/pests, and use up to 90% less water. It's cool, you should look into it.

The problem with hydroponics, is you have to spend a bit of time watching over your plants, tweaking things, making sure the nutrient levels/ph/oxygen/etc are all good, but you can actually grow all of your own vegetables at home very easily this way.

What is really cool though, is when you mix hydroponics with aquaculture, or raising fish... You can have a tank of tilapia, and the waste-water from the tilapia provides the nutrients for your plants, and your plants filter that waste-water so it can go right back into your fish tank!

I've been looking at it, and it seems like you can basically feed a family of 4 off of a space 500-800 square feet. You can't get every vegetable, and you can't get things like apples or bananas, but it's now officially one of my goals to get an aquaponic system set up... all the fish and veggies my family can eat smile

Anyway, I was thinking how great it would be for groups to make these systems for those who are less-fortunate... someday I hope to have my own charity.

Such a charity program is being attempted in South East Asia I believe. Been watching Doomsday Preppers?

Nope. We've just started gardening, but with everything else it's so much work... Somebody suggesting hydroponics to me and I've been doing research.

Someday I'll win the powerball, then I'm going to build orphanages, and teach those kids trade skills, and have aquaponic systems set up for them to work and learn on, then when they are older they can operate their own.

        Someday smile

It's a good idea. The first episode of Doomsday Preppers has a fully operating hydroponic plant and talapia system that apparently feeds their family in a small swimming pool. It's worth looking at just for the ingenuity of it.

    That is an interesting idea.
