Why are they doing this? Is it something to do with panda/google?
Where are they fleeting to? What other sites are out there that isn't battling with google and is similar to hubpages?
I don't know if they flee, but lots of people put HubPages to the side and work on other projects that yield more money for their efforts. Freelance writing gigs aren't affected by search engine algorithm updates, and lots of people have their own websites that are getting traffic just fine.
Why didn't you post on this thread? I was waiting for you to post on this thread.

People are always leaving, but new people are always arriving.
Pre-2011, there were many professional and semi-professional internet writers here, because HubPages was a better income generator than your own blog or website due to its high trust level with Google.
When that trust was lost, some of those people stayed and tried to find a way to recover. However as Google continued to issue further updates and the goalposts kept changing, most of them gave up and moved on. They were replaced by amateur writers who aren't seeking a living wage, and by writers from countries where that lower income is worthwhile by their standards.
The new Featured/UnFeatured system on HubPages caused another wave of leavers. They were writers who never made any money but were just happy to have their work showcased online (they never got enough traffic so their Hubs were quickly unFeatured), or those with poor English whose Hubs started failing QAP. They will be replaced too.
Something jars with sentence....should it it not be "where are they fleeing to?" Maybe I'm wrong...
no i meant flee. just typed this fast. sorry
In answer to your original question, the serious writers/marketers went on to host their own domains, if they hadn't already, and many left and went back to their day jobs.
Many more kept some of their work here, but never forum post.
Many writers here have more than one account, and I wouldn't be at all surprised to find that no-one actually left.
It's quite nice here, don't you think?
I think it's lovely here. What sites are people writing on besides WordPress? There's such a huge learning curve with it, I do not enjoy using it.
Wordpress is not a writing site, it's either software (.org) or a hosting service (.com) where you can run your own blog. Yes, there's a learning curve but that's true of any business!
A professional internet writer once said to me that successful writing online is 10% writing and 90% other stuff - and he was right. If you're not prepared to learn about SEO, backlinking, self-promotion, etc etc, you won't earn much anywhere.
When I first joined HubPages, it was possible to "just write" and earn a decent income. If you learned all the other stuff, you could earn more, but it wasn't essential. These days that's not the case, IMO.
Of course if you're just here for fun, that's a different story.
These 2 threads should help answer your questions.

I have been thinking of leaving HubPages for a while now because of several reasons. With their latest ebay/amazon update I now have to reformat over 90 hubs (Some had not been published yet and I was waiting for Halloween). Rather than doing this I will use my time looking for a site and...

I've been an active user of HP for over 6 years. Over that time, my income would increase until, suddenly, my "reads" would take a hit and my (modest) income would take a drop. This has happened a number of times, as you all know. And, I dutifully went through my articles and modified,...

So other than the fact that Google has apparently decided I am a crappy writer and my traffic is down from 17k a day to maybe 1600... with a similar decline in income... Do we yet know why this happened? Feeling a little bitter. Have had to take on enough clients that I rarely have time to...

I have been away from hubpages for over a year now and I was just browsing all my hubs and looking at all the new features available to improve my hubs, but before I dive in and redo all my Hubs I was wondering is Hubpages still a reliable source of income? Or is it dead and buried? Is anyone still...
