I received an email saying my Hub has "spammy elements"

For the first time since writing at HP, I have had an email saying that a Hub cannot be featured because it has "spammy elements." The email goes on to say that it could be that an ad is not related to the topic. I have only got one amazon capsule on the Hub in question (which I have now changed).
As I am a writer from Gippsland, I try to feature ads for books for other Gippsland writers. The original capsule did just that. Now the capsule features another local book that I advertise regularly.
Has anyone else encountered this problem?

"Spammy elements" means a link to something that isn't relevant to the subject of the Hub.  That's most likely to be an Amazon capsule but it can also be a link in the text, to another website or to another Hub.

In this case, it's very likely the Amazon capsule.  It's nice to do other writers a favour, but ONLY if their book is directly relevant to the subject.

        Thanks, Marisa smile
As I said, I have changed the capsule and resubmitted. No emails yet, so fingers crossed that has fixed the issue.

I guess it depends what you changed it to!

@Marisa, I have the same problem. I received a similar
email about a hub that said the same thing about my hub
having "spammy elements" and for the life of me, I cannot
        understand it.
Can you define this in simple English?

Hi Ken, I hope you are keeping well.

"Spammy elements" just means you have a link in  your Hub that is against the rules.  Perhaps you have linked to a website or blog that HubPages doesn't approve of, or an Amazon product that's not appropriate for the topic?

I've started to get notices about hubs being unfeatured for "spammy" or "quality content" issues - and some of the have been my most popular hubs!

I've come to the conclusion that Hub Pages is actively trying to discourage hubbers from using Amazon or other sales modules.  It's starting to tick me off that quality hubs that have actually been generating traffic and some sales keep getting unfeatured, when they've been fine since the transistion from squidoo.

It would be helpful it you were told what it was for.

Hi Nick. The issue has been fixed and the Hub has now passed the QAP and been featured. I don't like posting Hub URLs unless I have a huge problem that I can't work with suggestions without the Hub being seen.

For a while, I've been feeling that HubPages has become paranoid about Amazon capsules and now I'm convinced.

I wrote a Hub called  "DVDs for Male Dancers", following some requests for more resources for male dancers.   It took some effort to track down some good ones - out of all the DVD's published, only half a dozen are specially for boys.  I've included four.

Obviously, I've included a product capsule for each DVD on Amazon.  I'm sure that's the reason for the "spammy elements" penalty - but for goodness sake, you can't tell me it would be MORE helpful to my reader to remove the links to buy the DVD's?  People have asked me to find these products for them, and they couldn't be more relevant to the subject of the Hub!

That's how I feel. But when I've pointed out to the team that the owner of the site has hubs such as "5 Best..." such-n-such with an Amazon module for each product, I'm given some reason why that's OK but the hub of my own that I'm questioning is not. And I'm referring to a hub very specifically about the items in the Amazon modules, with plenty of text per sales module and personal experience. Heck, I even had a problem with an Amazon module for a book I was reviewing. Where's the logic?

I do prefer when rules and guidelines, even if I think they're a bit extreme, are applied evenly across the board.

I would resubmit that one.  I have written hubs that feature multiple products without any problems if that is the subject of the hub.

I also have several Hubs with multiple products, but they were all written over a year ago and haven't been edited since - so they have not had to go through QAP.   This one has been resubmitted three times now, still not Featured.

I get the same feeling about Amazon modules.  I really get the impression HP doesn't want hubbers using them and is doing everything possible to discourage them.

My hub about the painted bunting was featured until I updated it to report a recent sighting. Then I received the email about spammy content and the hub was unfeatured. It had one link in it, to a bird watching organization, and one ad each for Amazon and eBay. I deleted the link and republished but that didn't work, then I deleted the Amazon and eBay capsules and it was still declared spammy (which it totally isn't) and then I finally added another photo or callout or something and republished for the fourth time and it finally passed inspection. It's a hub about a local wild bird sighting - nothing "spammy" at all.

In the last 2 days, I received the same type of e-mails and I  just updated one of the pages.

I am saving myself the headache of updating and adding 300 words to each Amazon capsule...so I just deleted ALL my HubPages.

I don't understand how so pages I visit  have NO text in the Amazon capsule, those pages still remain active. I will be moving content to my websites and going over to Pinterest to direct there instead of HubPages.

    Good luck to all!
    Shelly

The majority of times that I have included amazon capsules in a Hub, there has not been an option to add text. Where that option exists to provide a description of the product within the capsule, I do.

The problem with the Amazon capsule is that you don't get the format options you get with a text module.

If you choose a specific product instead of using keywords, there is always an option to include a description.

Oh I always include the description - but I prefer to do it using the text box and then I get the option to use bold or italics or bullet points

The nuisance now with the way HubPages looks on a mobile phone, that doesn't always look good

Not a problem on my new sites! wink

In fact bullet points in text modules on Hubpages in mobile format are not a problem either.

The problem is the fact you can't do them in the text box within the Amazon module.

Long paragraphs of text is NOT the way to write for mobile devices. Bullet points help enormously with getting key facts across fast for the skim reader.

In fact I'd go so far as to say that bullet points are an essential bit of text formatting
