How would you encourage your child to embrace middle school and not be afraid?

My ADHD (non-medicated) daughter is afraid to enter middle school. The size of the school, not making friends, cant find her classes, what does she wear, oh she afraid and I would like to encourage her in new creative ways to embrace it as an opportunity to grow.

you should remind your daughter that changes are a good part of growing up.  to help her with her clothes, maybe you could take her shopping at some less expensive store and buy her some cheaper cute clothes.  for the friends thing, you should encourage her to join clubs and activities at school.  don't worry your daughter will be fine once she gets into it!  for her classes, have her write down her schedule and keep it with her at all times, this way she will have an aid and be less confused.

Being a former teacher and psychotherpist I would tell you that what she is feeling is normal. All kids feel uncomportable about entering into a new situation... even I do.

I would also talk with the counselor and teacher and ask for their help to have them have a fun get acquainted game the first day.

During the summer, which is almost over, maybe you can find kids her age in your neighborhood and plan a get together day with one of the kids.

And by all means, don't "should" on her. "you should do this, you should feel this."

One of the greatest challenges of this age group is overcoming the fear of exposure, outside the home. You can change this by teaching your daughter self-confidence. Her fears are real, because these experiences are new to her and poses challenges that she has never had to face. This is why exposure to life is so relevant. Address each fear as they present and slowly teach her that this fear is something that she can learn to manage by developing her confidence.
One of the greatest injustice is sending our chidren into the world with spirits of fear. Use these opportunities to introduce her to her capabilities, rather than her fears.
