Is the Swine flu a real epidemic or a media created one?
The World Health Organization has called it an epidemic, it is worldwide. So yes, it is real.
No doubt it's an epidemic. The question is if it's more dangerous than other flus. As it seems it tends to hit younger people more, otherwise healthy people, and in some cases with scaringly fatal result. So in Sweden we aim to vaccinate every single person in order to minimize the damage...
I do not even believe that it is a media created one as much as a government one! I believe they want everyone to feel this state of emergency from a new strand of the flu. This way they could push their health care plan. They thought there would be more fatal cases due to lack of insurance and it is quite the opposite. There have been some tragedies but not due to lack of insurance.
I personally believe that the Government created this swine flu epidemic and there are people getting paid very well because of it.
In the strictest sense it is an epedemic - but if you look at the stats, it's no where near as 'bad' as Bird Flu, Aids, and many other diseases. The press always pick up on something like this and exagerrate.
I remember when I was in England there were two major scares:
1) Some kind of flesh eating bacteria - it killed 9 people.....in 5 years (or something like that).
2) Mad Cow's disease - more serious but not as bad as the press made it out to be.
All I can say to all of this is.........Moooooooooo!
In real sense its a epidemic. But with the so called awareness ( read hype) it seems to be a created one. With so many nations reeling under its effects & with the number of deaths this flu has accounted for and is still causing it is enforcing its status as a epidemic!!
With this it has established its position amongst the other well known epidemics of malaria, yellow fever etc.
It is an epidemic, and yes the media is blowing it out of proportion. Of course, tell that to someone who's lost a child to it.
I think the reason it became a source of concern worldwide is that there was no vaccine to help prevent it. And since it is a mutation of three viruses into one, it's a huge concern to medical experts. The real problem isn't how many people this strain of flu kills or doesn't kill. The problem is how many will die in the next mutation and what will we be able to do about it.

Just curious to see how many people are really feeling the effects of the Swine Flu or is it all just to cause mass hysteria.

The WHO, not the rock group, some health agency, has declared a swine flu pandemic. Just to be on the safe side, I would curtail all contact with barnyard animals of any type.

Goldacre's a great writer, on science and maths and stats. Here he writes about poor perception of risk many are showing:""Yeah, but you know, it could be like Sars and bird flu, they didn't materialise, they were hype." Simon Jenkins suggested the same thing. It's not true, I said....
