Florida has no income tax, which is one reason it is such a popular retirement destination.

In Florida many of the most popular retirement communities are in the central part of the state, between Tampa and Ocala. If you are budget-minded, you might check out retirement communities such as those near Mt. Dora and The Villages.

If you are super-budget minded , we have seen retirement communities that offer very cheap living near Lake Placid, Florida, and also near Melbourne, Florida.

Palm Harbor has been ranked as a top retirement community in Florida. It is appealing, because Florida has no state income tax and Palm Harbor is not incorporated and therefore, levies few or no taxes of its own in Pinellas County other than by local referendum. read more

Patty Inglish has given you some great info with her hubs. I live on the west coast of Florida, north of Tampa, in fact, very close to Palm Harbor.
This area seems to be somewhat more affordable than the east coast of Fl, which also is quite crowded.  There are nice neighborhoods and restaurants, easy access to the three major cities, Tampa, St. Petersburg and Clearwater. Palm Harbor and Dunedin are both close to beautiful beaches, which have been in the best beaches in the world category numerous times, Honeymoon Island and Caladesi Island. Either area is close to the Dunedin causeway where many people go to walk, watch the sunset, or sit and enjoy the water.

There are  lovely +55 communities or quaint neighborhoods. Dunedin has a beautiful, artsy, cobblestone paved downtown with many shops and restaurants.  It is a popular destination for retirees and yet has a blend of youthful vitality with frequent art/craft fairs downtown.  Taxes vary depending on what coast you're on if you're going to buy. Prices are decent now to buy. There are plenty of people trying to get rid of very nice condos and homes.  hope this helps.
