I just got a compilation of old Flash Gordon weekly comic strips from the 1930s.  Great drawing -- color artwork.  While the stories are not what you might call great literature, they compare well with recent stuff -- as good or better.

BTW, the fronts-piece claims that many of the Frank Raymond drawings served as inspiration for the Star Wars movies scene-setting.

I still have some Beano, Dandy and other children's comics from the 1960's through to the 1980s.. These in my mind are far better and more entertaining than some of the "dark" graphic novels available today..

Michael Turner's Soulfire. Great series, probably the best comic artist of this generation...or others. The only name, that springs to mind, that is bigger, is Stan Lee, and he was a writer/producer, not an artist.

Any Superman graphic novel is a winner in my book - especially the DC One Million series. Outside of Marvel and DC, Neil Gaiman's Sandman comics are a classic. Lastly, I like the original Incredible Hulk series in graphic form.
