Yes, I think its an effect of the habit of the mother.

While there is a very good chance his mother's habits damaged his brain, there are ways you can make things better.

Firstly, have him practice on focusing. Daily. Not like Jedi training or anything, but maybe get a course that can help him develop his focus and critical thinking abilities. The earlier you can get him started the better off he will be.

This will help is cognitive thinking and with enough practice he might be able to combat the problems obviously passed down to him by an irresponsible mother. It's not a quick fix by any means, but might be able to allow him to remember things for a longer period of time.

I'm sorry but much of what you're saying is myth. Go back and look at some of the women who had healthy baby's after doing all sorts of things that are considered bad, one being Grace Slick (singer for the band Jefferson Airplane). Marijuana is a dangerous drug? Who told you that? Whatever is causing the child to forget should be looked at but the blame game is not the answer.  Peace!!

I'm no expert but I would think that if his memory loss is caused from his mother taking drugs and drinking, that the symptoms would have shown up much sooner.

Is there something new going on in his life? Problems at school? a subject that maybe he's not understanding? is he in love???? Is he a creative kid? Creating ideas and stories in his mind?

I would suggest keeping a journal of what type of things he is forgetting. Is he forgetting things like where he put his shoes? (normal for a kid) or things like - something you have asked him to do?

I honestly do not think he is having memory loss but instead he is growing up and getting busy with life and busy with his own thoughts!
