   Is fishing good for a relationship/marriage? Why or why not?
   
   I read that you and your husband enjoy fishing together, and thought about some of the reasons fishing can make two people feel closer. I don't know if it can help a couple whose relationship is failing, but it certainly seems to make a good relationship better. I'd love to read your thoughts on this.

   Fishing is a very interesting hobby, because on one hand you have hardcore fishers with all the proper equipment who always fish alone, or in groups with other men, and on the other you have people who take their whole family fishing. From personal experience, fishing can definitely be a very fun family/couple pasttime; I think the biggest problem is dealing with the "masculinity" of it. Some men simply refuse to have women fish with them, where as some women find it ridiculous, boring or just simply "unwomanly". If you don't have any of those barriers in your relationship, I don't see why you shouldn't try it; I think it's an interesting past time, and it could be very fun to sort of "switch roles" for a moment.

   Personally I believe it makes our marriage stronger because it's something we both enjoy doing together and not too many couples enjoy alot of things together especially fishing. I dont know if you and your hubby go fishing together but if you dont you should go especially at night if you have a boat if you know what i mean it's alot of fun.    Any activity that you can share is good for any relationship. You don't have to be fishing together...one can be fishing and the other can be sitting on the shore or walking the beach. The point is that when he finishes the activity that he enjoys, you are right there, to share the triumphs, the thrills or the disappointment.

   Just like any other hobby it depends on how you treat it.  There are times where I take my wife and kids fishing, but there are also times when I have gone with just my grandfather or even alone.  I think if you want it to be a family event you have to make sure that you keep it interesting for your spouse/girlfriend.  My wife likes to go fishing with me, but she doesn't enjoy staying out as long as I do.  As a compromise I try not to stay out as I might by myself and she will bring a book or something else that she can do when she wants a break.

   When the surf fishing starts for me in NJ, my wife calls herself a fisherman's widow. That probably gives you a good idea of how it affects us. Then on the other hand, when she does come with me and we relax, bring dinner, and sit by the water, it's timeless and spectacular.
