Is there a better way to post official HubPages announcements?

I completely missed the announcement about activating your eBay account.  That doesn't affect me as an existing member, but it did mean I gave incorrect advice to a newbie (thankfully Sunforged set me right).  Uninvited Writer just did the same thing on another thread.

I didn't used to miss official announcements because I would browse the forums using the "latest posts" feature.  These days I don't, because I'm fed up of trailing through silly games and vicious religious threads to find the interesting stuff, so I go straight to the sub-forums I like.

I've heard a few people say they're taking the same approach, so I'm not the only one who would have missed the announcement.

I'm wondering how else announcements could be made so they're more noticeable?  As they're fairly infrequent, would people mind getting an email?  Any other ideas?

Who else missed the eBay activation announcement, anyway?  Was it just me and Rachel?

I missed it too. But now I'm reminding myself to stick my head into the Announcements sub-forum at least once a day.

What would be nice, and unfortunately I know of no forum software that allows it, is being able to organise sub-forums according to how a user likes to access a site. Even hide from view the sub-forums you want to avoid.

The thing is, announcements are so rare that I can see myself getting complacent after two or three weeks of checking daily and seeing nothing - laziness I know, but human nature.

Hi marisa I love the forums and visit often, however I can see how it would be easy to miss an anouncment maybe anoncements via email?

    I agree...

I try to check that forum every now and then, but it's hard to determine which are new because people post on "new announcements" from months and months ago, so it pops up on top.

There have been many times that I've thought that something was new, clickto read about it, then find out it was 6+ months back.

A date on the announcements when the original post was posted would be nice to have as well.

      Yes, that would help too.

I agree. I'm one of those people who don't look at the general forum listings (because of all the recent silliness and vitriol) and just go to the forums I like.

Quite frankly on important announcements like the Ebay issue, I don't mind getting an email from Hubpages.

I'm pretty sure the big announcements come in the weekly newsletter, which is good for hubbers that don't spend their time in the forums.

It was announced in the newsletter, but I think for something that's this big a deal, a broadcast email would have been a good idea.

I would love to hide certain sub-forums too in the "latest activity" page.

Making the forums more customizable would be great. There are several areas I'd like to hide.
