Yes, it's good.  It's more than good.  If you want to do it, then just do it.  Even at a very low beginner level, when those chords and beats come together there is a shared feeling of enjoyment in 'the band'.  Great fun.

    how young is young?

Most serious bands will want you to be able to drive your gear to shows and rehearsals.  But if you're still in school you might be able to use the school's music room or hall after school.

If you can find a way to do it, then do it.  You learn way more playing in a band than in your bedroom.

Honestly, the younger you start perusing it the better your chances of success are.

Go for it with all your heart and surround yourself with positive people. Don't listen to those who would tell you that "you can't do it," or that it's, "just a dream."

If you want it bad enough, work hard enough, and are persistent enough, then you can make it happen.

However, don't expect to become a millionaire. Although it's a possible outcome of this path it is NOT very likely.

Becoming a professional musician is not very hard to accomplish (I'm technically a "professional" musician). All it means is that you are getting paid to play your instrument.

Becoming a "rock star" on the other hand is extremely hard to accomplish.

    Best of luck!

There's never a "too young." Look at all these kids of famous people getting their start at 5 years old. If they can do it, so can you. I started learning when I was 4. There was a long period where I wasn't playing do to family issues. I started back up probably about my 8th grade year. I was in a band, and we practiced every day after school. We would either meet in the band hall at school, or at the drummer's house. We didn't get anything serious yet. It was a small town. Eventually I went solo until I moved to a bigger town. Here, I've played in 5 bands, been in well only a few shows, but shows none the less. It's great fun and when you're young it's almost worry free! So dude follow your goals, before you dull out on it and never want to play again.

I think the younger, the better, because we get old very quickly.

Look at the boy bands and the biggest stars right now: Justin Bieber, Mylie Cyress, Big Time Rush, and others.

I have been writing music since the age of 11 and never been in a band that played my originals. They all want to do covers. I am in my mid 40's now and although it is never too late, I wish I had some success.

Bottom line: Start as young as you want and as young as you can and get out there, kick butt, and promote your music as fast as you can.
