Is it better to be very rich and have bad name or to be very poor and have a good name?
I think it all boils down to what you can live with, the consequences you are willing to accept.
I could not step on someone to get ahead.
I will not be stepped on if the end result is not to my liking.
For me personally, I would much rather be poor and have a good name. Your name indicates what you have done in this life and what kind of person you have been. Being rich doesn't really say much except that you know how to make money.
I value my dignity and reputation so I'll never become very rich.
Being not very rich and comfortable is fine with me.
