What does it really mean to rightfully divide the word of God?

Study to show yourself approved to God, a workman that needs not to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth.2 Tim 2:15
May be able to comprehend with all saints what [is] the breadth, and length, and depth, and height; Eph 3:18

This is an excellent question.  I believe this scripture refers to those who believe in God.  We are to study and seek for God's approval unashamedly.  A believer's responsibility is to understand and gain knowledge about the word of truth -- the bible is the word of truth.  We are not to interpret the text to fit our circumstance, but to understand the text according to God's plan.  The study of the bible must be done with a desire to know the meaning God intended.  We must be diligent and use aides such as:  bible dictionary, concordance and prayer.  The word of truth (bible) is no easy one to interpret -- but wisdom will help us, because wisdom is the principal thing.  Thanks for the question.

This translation from the American Bible Society makes this minor teaching more understandable:

2 Timothy 2:15 (Contemporary English Version)

Do your best to win God's approval as a worker who doesn't need to be ashamed and who teaches only the true message.

The second verse is far more meaningful. Here is a good translation with the important following verse added:

    Ephesians 3:18-19 (New Living Translation)

18 And may you have the power to understand, as all God’s people should, how wide, how long, how high, and how deep his love is. 19 May you experience the love of Christ, though it is too great to understand fully. Then you will be made complete with all the fullness of life and power that comes from God. (this refers to receiving the baptism of the Holy Spirit)

Dividing the word of God has absolutely nothing to do with reading and trying to interpret scripture.

It is knowing the difference of Truth and False.

The word of God is Truth....... and  the false is not.
