The Metrodome is now the Metro - Bowl! Was this incident predictable or preventable?

After a 17 inch snowstorm (which doesn't seem like a lot for Minnasota) The roof of the Metrodome collapses (see video on yahoo homepage) There had to be a problem before this right? Was this accident not preventable?

The roof of the Metrodome was bound to have something like this happen because of the material.  I am amazed it held up as long as it has.

There is no way that could have been prevented at all. WHEN Mother Nature is in control no styrofoam, polysynthetic roof has a chance. Here in Canada 17 inches on the whole roof of an arena has caused it to collapse, and they were made of metal. BY the size overall 17" of snow would be extremely heavy. Thank God it didn't happen during the game, imagine the devastation.

I think it is just a miracle the the stadium was essentially empty at the time of the collapse.

That is amazing... as mentioned, it's lucky that no-one was under it when it collapsed.
Looking at the above picture, it looks like the dome was very shallow, maybe if the angle was steeper, then the snow could have run off gradually and not stuck to such a severe extent. As mentioned, 17" of snow over such a large area, one hell of a weight!!

It is a weird coincidence considering the Vikings are threatening to move if they don't get a new stadium...
