   What are the characteristics/traits of a real/true friend?
   
   I have noticed it is more common for people (in general and sometimes friends as well) to sympathise with you when you are in need or trouble. The matter becomes a bit more complicated when you are successful, realized. What do you think are or should be the qualities of a real friend?

   Friends who have gone through thick and thin with you would have proven that they are not there just for the good times, Time will show which ones of your friends are trustworthy, loyal and made of strong character, I once have been told that true friends are hard to find,many go through life with perhaps one or two. If you come out on the other side with a handful of true life-long friends, you are truly one of the lucky ones.

   Appreciate you for what you are and viceversa.
   
   You can feel free with him/her and don't fear any counter effect.
   
   You can count on him/her.
   
   Share same basic ethical values

   A true friend will know by the tone of your voice that you need them. A true friend is able to read the truth, even when you are telling them "you're fine".

   Someone who is dependable,trustworthy,has your back through thick or thin.Someone who  wont be afraid to tell the truth even when it hurts.Someone you can laugh with and someone you can cry with that's a true friend.

    A true friend would fight for the friendship even though so many conflicts happened along the way..He/she also always wanna know your updates and trying to reach you..

    A real friend is someone you can depend on, in good times and bad. I think it's odd that you say there is more sympathy when you're doing poorly as, from what I've seen, most people are rather fairweather when it comes to tough times.
    
    When times are good and you're buying drinks and laughing it up, they want to be around, but the moment you need a shoulder, they disappear. A good friend will be there when the champagne is flowing and when you're eating ramen noodles.
    
    A good friend will allow you to have your moments of joy and sorrow.
    
    As Greg said, they'll be loyal.
