I guess the best thing you can do if you cant take pills is stretching your back muscles.  I have major back pain that comes and goes from an old basketball injury and I find that stretching helps.  Alternate with a heating pad and ice while stretching while watching TV or something.  It might not be the same day but within a few days it might help.  Most likely it's going to hurt but trust me...it is going to help you.  Also, you should stretch your back when it is feeling fine.  When my back is at its worst I can barely move without bracing myself with my arms and throw in some sciatic pain and it's not fun at all.  Everyday stretching is the key and also some light exercises to strengthen your back and ab area which will lighten the load on your irritated muscles or spine.

Thankfully I can play hoops and be relatively pain free these days but playing around my kids is the tough one as far as my back goes.  It's pretty strange I suppose.  Good luck and I hope you feel better soon!

sit on a relaxed chair and  put your feet in a tub which contain half fill normal warm water and 2tbs salt in it. keep your feet in it for half an hour. you feel batter and your pain will removed by this activity.

My son has lower back pain and we bought him one of those suspension boards you lay down on and incline upside down or at an angle. It will stretch out your muscles and take pressure off your backbone. They are relatively inexpensive and help him.

May want to check into it.

I do this often , A small pillow in the small of your back on a floor. just for fifteen minutes or so , if it works  do it more often , the muscles you used need to be hyperflexed in the opposite direction . good luck
