Do you think worldwide nuclear disarmament is possible?

If so, how would it be attained? Please, no silly answers like "If everyone were perfect and loved each other". If you think this is not at all possible, explain why not.

Political disarmament is very possible but a practical and verifiable agreement for the elimination of nuclear weapons is, in my opinion, a fleeting illusion. You cannot undo the discoveries of an entire area of science nor can you really stop nations who are determined to acquire these weapons.....Iran for example. The promise  of "power" a nuclear weapon can bring to a nation, both real and imagined, is simply unequaled and therefore the quest for this "power" by some in all consuming. These nations are not thinking peace as they move to acquire these weapons....they are thinking Power!
I believe there is only one example of a nation divesting itself of nuclear weapons......Canada gave up it's nuclear weapons in the early 80's and turned their arsenal over to the Americans.
While this is a great example of a nation standing for their principles most people are totally unaware that this even occurred.
Your question is very interesting and thought provoking. I look forward to reading other responses. Thanks

No...I absolutely do not and I pray that we as Americans wlll not give up ours thinking that some of those who are less than truthful have dispensed with theirs.  Bargaining from a position of weakness does not work.  Here's the thing, it does not matter what weapons we have;  it does not matter how much power or money we have....What matters is how we use it. We must have it to be in a position to bargain but it is our responsibility not to misuse it or to deal with someone else on a less than truthful basis in the process of bargaining.  America does not desire to take over the world.  America desires to be what it is and not be attacked or dominated....we desire to protect ourselves.  From that standpoint, the fact that we have nuclear weapons is not a threat to anyone in the world who is dealing on the top  of the deck.   Some of our people in America need to figure out that having a "gun in the house" is not a bad thing if we are responsible with it and do the right thing with our fellow man. There's an interesting book by Peter Scoblic on the topic - US Versus Them - well worth the read if this is a topic that interests you.
