Is corporal punishment (spanking/hitting) ever appropriate as a parenting strategy?
Is it ever ok or useful to hit your kids? If so, why? If not, why not? The bible indicates that the rod should not be spared, and some parenting research shows that an immediately delivered, slight spank, can increase the effectiveness of an extinction procedure.
of course it's apropriate and i would argue even necesary, of course you want to discipline your children not hurt them so you spank them the bare minimum so they understand the intention without of course inflicting any bodily harm.I have raised 4 children and i may have spanked them in total about a dozen times between all of them in their life, they always knew if i hit them is because they had done something they should never do again.
to those who think spankings are wrong i shake my head. everyone needs discipline once in a while, especially kids. as long as the spankings aren't from anger but rather for a practical purpose, i think some kids need them. i don't spank my kids only because they haven't done anything that justifies it.
I believe that a good, healthy swat on the rear end now and then can be instrumental in correcting a child's behavior. However...as with any other action in parenting...it must be for a consistent reason.
If you only think discipline can be enforced with violence you're a moron. If you can't deal with children without hitting them you're too butt stupid to have children. You teach children violence at home then wonder, when you're bailing them out, what went wrong. I've never hit either of my children, treated them gently and, when I raised my voice just a little, they were shocked, stood still and listened. They both turned out very well.

by Davinagirl3 14 years ago
I always said I would spank my children, if necessary. I was spanked as a child, but not excessively. I can remember 2 or 3 times. Now that I have a child, I am not so sure. What do you think? Are children receiving the discipline they need, lately? Are we, as...

I don't have children, but it seems to me that there are a lot more brats out there these days. Nieces and Nephews included. But parents don't believe in corporal punishment anymore. I remember getting whipped for bad behavior and I fully deserved it more times than I care to admit, but I never...
