To break free of an obsession you must either exercise extreme restraint or remove it from your life.  Time away should help recondition you to live without the obsession.  If you have an obsessive personality you may have to seek outside help and change your way of thinking.
Obsession is always excessive and excessive is not a good thing.  It can only be good if good arises from it indirectly but this good would not be a result of the obsession instead it would just be a coincidental byproduct.

Usually if you can overcome an obsession, it will be replaced by something else.  For example if you can overcome an obsession with overeating, you might find you are shopping too much, or smoking more.

I don't believe an obsession can ever be good because obsessions tend to be progressive and worsen with time, until they rule one's life.

Overcoming an obsession without professional help would be very difficult, especially if you have an addictive or obsessive personality.

Obsession is a cyclical thought pattern. It cam be overcome by first acknowledging the thought patten and then making a conscious choice. Doing this means making it clear to yourself that you're not powerless over your thoughts.

Many ancient religious beliefs teach that attachment, especially a strong one which would include your obsession, is negative and causes stress. It also can keep your thoughts in the future or past which distracts  you from the now.
