Why would you get a permit and pay to get married? when marriage is an expression of your love, A

permit is asking permission to do what is considered already a lawful act?  No permit can be given for something that is already your god given right.

To be married in a church or by a Justice of the Peace you must obtain a marriage licence before they will marry you. I do agree with what you are saying however.

Simple. Because the justice of the peace or the pastor needs a livelihood.

Marriage isn't only one thing. It can be "an expression of your love". It can also be a religious ceremony and commitment.

But, it is also a legal designation that has an impact on things like insurance, taxes, child custody, etc.

Expressing love is your right, defining your legal status isn't (fortunately or unfortunately).

The way I see it, our commitment for each other and being together was an expression of our love in and of itself. He gave up his entire life to move thousands of miles away from anywhere he'd ever known to be with me -- the only greater expression of love I can think of is that he's still here and not going anywhere.

When we got married, we really didn't see that as just an expression of love, we already had ways to express it to each other daily, and frankly those expressions are no one else's concern than ours. We paid for the marriage license and got married so that I could be on his health insurance, so that we could file jointly for taxes, and so that we would have legal rights to speak for each other in the event of severe illness or injury. Maybe not as romantic as most people's view of marriage, and I know a lot of people still don't see it this way, but that's the way I've always seen it.

I agree that it is our God-given right to love each other, but unfortunately it is in the capacity of the government to decide who can and cannot be legally married. We can express our love in many ways that the government never gets a piece of, but it won't help a lot with insurance.

It is the law, I suppose. It is either the law of the land or no way at all. We certainly did not make the rules - but we just got to abide by them.

So that we can pay more taxes in the US where marriage is penalized with an extra tax burden;)

There is a line in a hip-hop song by Wu-tang which I will always remember. Method Man said: "You don't need a ring to be my wife." I believe in that. Love is important, papers and metals not so much.

I know and I agree with what you are saying...I hate asking approval for something that I have a right to.

Marriage, in law, is a contract and has civil penalties if the contract is broken.

Why people enter into it is beyond me... gross ignorance I guess.

Our God given right is to love, but not show the physical affection of love outside of marriage. Marriage protects the spouse and children if something were to happen to one parent. I just got married last week to make a good example for my children, because I was tired of living in sin.
Another thing, a wedding is a good reason to throw a party!
