   Should a child 12yrs old be cooking this early in the kitchen.
   
   Do you think it is good to train them so they can know how to before they get older or is now the time.

   I think that 12 years old is a great age to start cooking as long as they are overlooked but an adult. As long as it takes before you feel comfortable with them cooking alone.

   i was cooking with my mom long before 12 and on my own by then,... its good to get them in there for lots of reasons,... in a practical sence, they learn that cooking is more than wether you want fries or not,... and the the time in the kitchen may be quality time that most over look,.. check this hub of mine...

   Absolutely, though still with supervision, especially when sharp knives, blenders, ovens, etc. are being used. My sister and I were watching and "helping" in the kitchen since we could walk, and even at three years of age we were taught basics such as how to measure and sift flour, how much to stir biscuit dough so that it doesn't get tough, etc. As kids get older, they can learn more and more advanced techniques and definitions, and by 12 years old should certainly be allowed to do just about any cooking task with adult supervision.

   Children start cooking even younger than this.  You should be in the kitchen with your child while they are cooking.

   Absolutely. My 11 year old has been cooking for a couple of years. She still requires some supervision but doesn't like me looking over her shoulder. It's our parental duty to make sure we are giving our kids the tools they need to become independent. I think it can help their confidence as well. All of my children can cook or make some sort of meal, do their own laundry, clean the house, and other minor responsiblities. They are 13, 11, and 8. They set their own alarm clocks, wake themselves for school, make their own breakfast and get ready for school all by themselves. As I said previously, supervision is still required but they enjoy the feeling that they are in control of small parts of their daily routine. I am always right here to guide them, help them and sometimes I just miss doing it for them but I know it will make them stronger in the long run.

   My mom worked three jobs when I was 12 so I was at home a lot between the hours when school got out, and when she'd get home (around 10pm). Sure she would prepare meals ahead of time, and I'd microwave them, but little to her knowledge back then I was cooking on the stove, and the house never caught fire. Just teach them fire safety, and good habits such as keeping pan handles turned inwards so they don't get caught on baggy clothing, and make sure they know never to pour water on on a grease fire. I think it's a great way to learn responsibility, and lends a feeling of independence as a kid moves from childhood to adolescence. Good luck! Oh and by the way this is how I found my career. I've been a professional cook for 8 years now, and it all started at home in the kitchen.
