How can I keep the damn squirrels from eating my imported and domestic flower bulbs?
Of course, a .22 would work just fine...but short of that, what can you suggest to keep them far, far away from carrying off my beautiful (I think) tulip and iris bulbs?
I think you answered your own question there...
Most furry little critters are opportunists and as soon as they find a convenient source of food they will keep returning until the supply is exhausted.
If memory serves there is a pepper spray in Pet shops that is designed to stop cats from destroying furniture might be worth a try.
I must admit I have a weak spot for squirrels. When I was growing up in what was then known as Alderwood, after the alders trees that once grew in the area, squirrels were regular visitors to our backyard. There were three large maple trees at the... read more
I suggest you dont worry about the imported and domestic flower bulbs as they are not important. Suirrels are awesome critters and much more interesting to watch
Squirrels can actually be pretty cool to hang around. My grandfather had the same problem, so he started providing them with another source of inexpensive food. He got a large back of bird seed and a large bag of peanuts with their shells still on... mixed the two bags together and put them in the bird feeder away from the flowers. As long as you refill it every few days or even once a week, they should stay away from your flowers and will start to respect your space instead of destroying it. Watching the crazy critters has now become a past time for my grandmother since my grandfather passed away suddenly 3 years ago. Maybe you'll try this technique and it will help.
Good luck!
Well, here's another squirrel-related question...If I wanted to relocate them and yes, I do have a safe, live trap, what would you suggest using as bait (other than tulip bulbs, that is)?
Dogs usually do the trick. Of course dogs sometimes have an inclination to eat certain flowers.
Gosh, I wish that I had an informed answer to that question. Here's the thing, you should find out the answer, and write a hub about it. I promise you that a decent hub on that subject wouldn't have much competition, and that you could possibly be on the first page of any search engine's result pages with a hub like that.
The best way to keep them from stealing your bulbs is to plant them in wire cages or overlay the bedding area with a wire sheet secured with garden staples. I've never been able to get rid of squirrels. Trapped ones eventually come back , or others move into the abandoned nest. Blood meal, urea, pepper, etc. only work for a short time. I put out a seperate pile of seed/fruit/nut mixture to fill them up and keep them out of my feeders and fruit trees.
Buy a sling shot and some marbles-thats what my dad did at 78 yrs old and he was a great shot! LOL
