How can a teacher gain the support of a students parents (gaurdian) early in the school year?
As an experienced teacher I can answer this.... If you want parental support, you have to engage the parent. You have to stay in personal contact with them and you have to make them "feel" like you believe they are doing the best they know with their children.
You have to remember, all parents have an outstanding memory of their personal school experience. Some just loved Mrs. Oglethorpe while others absolutely hated Mr. Myers.
When parents approach the school they are flooded with the memory of their positive or negative experience. And many of them don't see themselves as on an equal plane with the teacher.
This is just basic info...but if you can grasp the perspective of the parent, (no matter the race, economics or culture), you will, with some effort garner their support.
Have a wonderful school year.
Thanks for asking, K9keystrokes! I'm actually working on a hub for this. I'll post it here in this question when it's ready!

There was a time when being a teacher was a secure as well as safe occupation. Now with some states laying off or retiring teachers, things have changed. If you are a teacher—or contemplating being one in the near future—what do you think will be your biggest challenge?

One of the hardest things to do as a parent is to look at the school situations your child gets into and see both sides of the issue. Being able to value both sides of the story is an important ability, and one that many parents fail to do well. That includes educators who are parents as well. Our...
