What is blamed for the increased crime rate in 1950's America?
what single entity is concidered to be the largest cause of the alarming increase in crime between the 1940's and 1960's in the US?
Most likely the baby boom that started after World War II was the main reason why crime increased in the U.S. in the middle of the 20th century. More than anything else, the percentage of the population that is in their late teens and twenties appears to be most significant factor in the crime rate. This is because most street crimes are committed by this age group.
In the 1990s, mayors around the U.S. bragged about cutting down crime rates. Some of the crime rate reduction may have had to do with the better economy of that time and better policing policies, but really the baby bust that was coming of age in the 1990s is the most significant factor in the decline in the crime rate. There was a smaller pool of criminals out there commiting crimes. Some even point to the Rowe V. Wade court decision in the early 1970s that reduced the number of unwanted babies that grew up to be criminals in the 1990s, but I that is too controversial to discuss in detail.
Motorcycle gangs and Mafia Organized crime groups competing for territory.
Rock_nj makes an excellent point about the population explosion. The crime reduction in the 1990s, which was widely publicized and gave Rudy Guliani quite a bit of praise, was mentioned in "Freakonomics." In addition, the legalization of abortion was also attributed to the reduction. I would say that, for the 1950s, it was probably veterans returning from WWII. Just like after Vietnam, many gangs (especially MCs) are established by returning vets. The official blame is probably placed on marijuana, jazz musicians, and the shenanigans of African-Americans.
the main cause is believer to be TV. i know it's hard to believe but a study showed that cities that first got TV had crime rate rise by as much as 400% in a 15 year period. they tracked which cities got it first versus crime escalating and the cities who first got it saw the first major increase in violent and property crimes.

Just a reminder that these attacks from Israel that kill innocentshttp://www.upi.com/News_Photos/News/Fun … &or=tnAre partially the fault of the US - we've been funneling millions (billions?) of dollars to subsidize their defense. It's called blowback.

I think it is due to the erosion of families. Mothers no longer stay home with their young children, and fathers are no where to be seen in a large percentage of families. The kids don't have a father figure, and I think this leads to joining gangs, dropping out of school, and criminal behavior. Am...
