   What do you know about Mormons?

   I know that
   
   -Mormons are members of the largest Church ever to begin in the United States!
   -They don't ingest drugs, including alcohol and caffeine
   -They tend to be very family-oriented and frequently have larger than average (for the U.S. )families
   -They are highly concentrated in the state of Utah but claim members all over the U.S. and the world, largely due to their focus on missionary effort.
   
   Anecdotally, I used to think I had some sort of anti-Mormon-missionary scent I gave off or something, because I would see Mormon missionaries all over town and none of them ever approached me. I realize this is silly, but I felt sort of offended! I'm really fascinated by religion, so I always felt it would be fun and interesting and a great learning experience to talk to a missionary and learn more about their experience doing missionary work.
   
   Well one day I was late to meet my partner for a ride and it was POURING rain and all of a sudden a Mormon missionary came out of nowhere! But because I was being picked up, was late, and was soaked, I didn't have time to talk. Chalk it up to bad luck, I guess, but at least now I know they aren't purposefully avoiding me.

   Oops,I forgot I asked this question until now. Just so you know Kate Spenser, I don't think the missionaries are avoiding you. I served a mission for two years in the UK and I just wanted to see what people generally knew. As for the caffeine bit, we are discouraged from ingesting it, but it isn't the end of the world if we do. It is mainly coffee and tea (not herbal teas though) that we avoid.
   As for your response passingtheword, SOME of the things you say may have some truth to them, but the way you say them makes me believe that you don't know the entire story or don't want to know. The teen suicides and rapes at BYU may or may not be true, but first I need to see the source of these statistics. From my brief search on those two subjects I found very little on the former except from Anti-Mormon sources and nothing on the latter. If it is not from a credible source, that is like saying 80% of all iPad users are snobs. There is no evidence to indicate as much. As for Joseph Smith being polygamist, that is true. So was, Abraham, Isaac and Jacob. So was the father of the prophet Samuel and Kings David and Solomon. So in fact is a very large portion of all humans that have ever lived. At this time polygamy is not practiced by the LDS faith because we abide by the laws of the land, but when it was practiced every person who was a part of a polygamist family entered willingly and any abuse or mistreatment of any of the family members was (and is) discouraged and viewed as criminal. As for the black skin, Biblical scholars of the majority of faiths have pointed to the Curse of Cain as resulting in people with black skin. In fact, this was on of the justifications for slavery. I would like to now point out that the LDS faith from the beginning was opposed to slavery. Additionally, Joseph Smith himself gave is own property and money to help many former slaves buy their families freedom.
   I can't help but feel your reply to the post was more along the lines of smearing the LDS faith rather than sharing what you really know.
