   Is speaking in tongues real or total fabrication?
   
   I've always had difficulty believing that people can speak in tongues.  What are your thoughts?

   I have seen a few people do this.  Even my friend's sister has done it.  Personally I think they are crazy and making it up, it is just my personal opinion.  Whether they are just making it up or their mind truly believes it, I do not know though.  I do believe that people can go into trances and do spirit drawings on the other hand though.  But just to stand there and start shaking and talking funny is a little too far fetched for me.

   Rambling nonsensical syntax is by no means impressive. However, there are plenty of accounts of people, even children, speaking in languages that they have never been exposed to, such as Latin. For someone who believes that angels and demons are the stuff of faiy tales, I can't agree that this is some sort of religious experience. Though, I truly have no idea how to explain it. Of course, I remember girls in school talking in pig latin...I wasn't impressed then, nor am I impressed now.

   I can't say I believe this today...
   However, from a purely biblical standpoint: Paul wrote in 1st Corinthians 14:5 that speaking in tongues should be done when there is an interpreter so that the entire congregation will be edified as well.
   Speaking in tongues is not a "selfish" gift to be kept to yourself.
   The bible also says that speaking in tongues comes from the Holy Spirit. What people forget is that the devil has the power to imitate God and his gifts. You must go back to the Word for verification, and beware of imposters.

   It's real, but like anything else, there are people who fake. I followed the miracle of tongue-speaking among women during the Middle Ages in one of my Hubs (also a paper for my Medieval History class as part of my master's program).
