How do you know if your child has A.D.D or is simply bored?

My 6 year old just started school and tends to be squirmy, talkative and doesn't pay attention.  I know she is advanced for her age (reads well, can do multiplication, etc.) and could be bored beyond her school work.  I wonder if this is the case with many kids who are classified to have A.D.D.

I think there are so many labels stuck on kids these days that it's no wonder parents get concerned and confused.

When kids start school this is a huge change to their life - new environment, faces, friends and routine - it's no wonder that many of them are excited and have difficulty sitting still for five minutes to concentrate. Also like any healthy 6 year old, they have bags of energy and need to work this off somehow. So I agree with you  rather than all these new fangled labels being stuck on kids, natural explanations need to be looked at first, especially as you say with your own wee girl who is obviously very intelligent and is probably just bored at times.

Certainly if a child is falling behind with schoolwork, isn't socialising properly and so on, then perhaps there is need for concern, but even here the explanation may just be in the personality and temprement of the child - and this might be normal for them -  rather than anything more serious.

This was a really interesting question.

If you're concerned, go to your doctor or school officials.  They'll have you fill out a questionnaire.  Based on your answers, they'll make a diagnosis.

I guess I am not one to naturally trust doctors bent on pushing medications nor schools.....I am not exactly there yet I suppose but thought it was worthy of discussion as I am sure there are plenty of parents out there who are concerned.  I try and look at all the angles rather than have someone make those decisions for me immediately.  Plus I think I am a little concerned about having my child stamped with a lifetime mental problem.

The first thing I would do is check his diet for RED 40, Sodium Benzoate and other additives.  It can make a tremendous difference and cleaning up the child's diet won't hurt anything.  But to tag a child with ADD or ADHA before exploring the other causes can affect him/her for life.

ADD and ADHD also tend to have anger issues, and temper flare ups.  My granddaughter became a different child when my daughter started reading labels and removing certain things from her diet.

I would have sworn she was ADHD or ODD, but her behavior turned around completely.

You should consult not a pediatrician (because they are not developmental specialists) but seek out an evaluation through your local school district, a neurologist, or a developmental psychologist. Children with ADHD tend to have higher IQ's and therefore do bore easily.  The more "downtime" they have the worse it is. Get him properly evaluated and create ways to challenge him and keep him appropriately busy.
