The first one! The media is a reflection of our society. Thats the reason why american movies differs with asian ones.

Depends on how intelligent you are.  Intelligent people realize that the media is nothing but mental garbage designed to rot and control your mind.  If you are really un-intelligent, you won't probably notice anything besides the fact that TV now usually makes you feel like cr%p.  Un-fortunately, our society does reflect the media to a large extent:  tired, zombified, complacent and semi-miserable.  Notice the LACK of intensity in modern-music?  Blech.   I actually will watch Tv with friends to see how much I can handle.  This I do not recommend........do not try this at home (or anywhere else).

I'd say both. I tend to try to stay away from most media outlets myself. Only because there seems to be a fear campaign happening along with being told what I should consume.
I don't much appreciate the news showing the baby pandas last and the small child who was victim of a heinous crime first, I think it should be the opposite way around.
I think the media tries to control us, perhaps media is the new religion? I've heard the media spread more hate then anywhere else and it has always mastered grabbing my curiosity then once they manage to pull me in there's a commercial break, buy toothpaste because no one likes someone with bad breath, by this new crummy ab trainer because no one like someone flabby, buy the new Betty Crocker cake mix to give yourself an indulgent treat etc.
The media has created the society we live in and we create the media that moulds it.
    Am I making sense?
I must give credit to Marilyn Manson here because he said virtually the same thing in Michael Moore's "Bowling for Colombine".
    Good question though.

I would say both. Media reflects what is happening in our society, and our society sways or determines what is reflected in the media.

The media is 99.9% owned by the 1% so it reflects how they want you to perceive your world.

If you are to understand anything about the 'real world' it is vital that you find alternative sources for all your information and news etc.

the media is a reflection of the society because it can not exist without the society, actually the media is created for the society and not the society for the media.

Media people think of themselves as opinion shapers. Whatever the ideology or political party with which a news institution may be aligned, and every one of them is, the function is the same: propaganda disguised as news reporting written behind a facade of dedication to fact. The propaganda is an attempt to make society reflect the views of the media, the disguise is the illusion necessitated by the expectations of society. The mass media both reflect and influence. It isn't a dichotomy, it's a process.

The media is bought and sold for profit, esp for fooling society. The society is influenced by media, many who read at the 3rd grade level.

My answer is "neither" because these are two different questions.
