   No, not at all...I consider myself an effective speaker and have been asked to speak at my University on occasion.  I do not belong to any professional organization for public speaking, such as Toastmasters.   I will say, though, that I had to take a p.s. class when I attended a community college.  It was part of the mandatory courses for basic degree.
   
   I think some people are more comfortable speaking in front of an audience, while others take courses in order to hone this skill.  Good question.

   When you go up to the podium to speak, you are probably thinking about whether you are going to give an effective speech.  You are probably also thinking about whether you have worn the right tie, and whether you should have gone to the bathroom first, and whether you did turn off the gas at home, and a million other things.
   
   If people will just let go of all of those things in their mind when they step up to the podium and concentrate on giving an effective speech, I believe that many, if not most, will be able to deliver a great speech without any sort of training.

   I think public speaking comes naturally to some people and as long as their language skills and vocabulary are sufficient, they shouldn't need a public speaking course.

   I think it depends upon the person. There are those who can master the art of public speaking without undergoing a speaking course while others just seem to be born to be a public speaker. Me? I have experienced several instances that I have to speak in front of so many people but it seems I can't get my nerves out of my system, so to speak.

   Undergoing a public  speaking course would prepare those without experience how to speak effectively to a group.  But it is not necessary if one has experience speaking in front of large audiences such as politicians.
   
   Even politicians can use pointers on how to improve public speaking so it also depends on the speaker's confidence when speaking in public.  One  major fallacy  of speaking in public is the lack of confidence and being non-intelligent about the topic. 
   
   Therefore undergoing a public speaking course could be beneficial to the novice speaker or the experienced speaker because even in public speaking,  practice and preparation is paramount for an effective speaking performance.

   A great speech therapist or public speaker can be able to guide you. However, we can also learn to speak publicly by first not worrying so much of opinions. We should be comfortable in our own shoes. That is so important to our well being. When we feel confident about ourselves; then we can make wonderful speeches. I have seen people make profound speeches. And its not that we have to be a great scholar. We have to be confident in the subject matter. Sometimes, language barriers can be overcome with confidence, humor, and a strong understanding of our audience and our subject matter.
   
   Also, reading aloud at home or learning by looking at yourself in the mirror. Recording your speech and playing it again is great as well. These are all effective mechanisms.
