   Why have we let political correctness get out of hand?
   
   Before long people will be afraid to say hello to some one in case they offend a person who does not speak English.

   Because we've actually thought too hard about offending people and not got on with our lives.
   
   We've also given courtesy to others who should not have been allowed it!
   
   We have created the problem for ourselves by listening too often to the busybodies and minorities for fear of insult

   That's an easy question to answer.
   The main reason is that the vast majority of us a intellectual followers, not leaders. That would account for our fairy tale religions and our dispicable partisan politics.
   
   Secondly, those of us that know better and could choose correctly, don't. Apathy, cowardness, and simply not wanting to rock the boat are the reasons here.
   
   Not a very pretty picture of humanity is it? One wonders how we got this far...

   I definitely think we have let political correctness get out of hand. Don't get me wrong, we need to be sensitive to others, but we sometimes take it too damn far.

   I agree with icountthetimes that this could be an important topic for forum discussion. Within the shorter scope of this answer, I can only suggest that it is a bane of civilization and politics. The more civilized we became, the more barbaric we have become in dis-allowing for the others, their opinion, their sentiments, their way of life. When you come down to the individual level, and you meet this Chinese or Afghan or Indian in their street, outside their home, and you discuss the world and how things are- you would not find that there is much difference in concerns or they would so much as turn a hair at the lack of etiquette (as per their society) that you may display. It is when so called Leaders (political or religious or social) come to distort the words and play with the meanings that the question of being 'politically correct' or the impatience at its absence comes in.

    its the lieral squishiness infecting the zeitgeist of the nation... the touchy feely  cant even think to offend- no winners and losers - mental illness- brought on by lierals-socialists and commies. people can't say anything tht may- "offend" anyone ever.
    Reality , truth and true fairness have died a slow death over the years and it has been left to rot like a carcus on the forest floor of our discontent.

    It began with intelligent but still naive people in universities and colleges with good intentions. Hell is paved with such intentions. Despite being intelligent none of them decided to heed the many warnings against political correctness expressed in a novel written in 1948 and published in 1949. The book? Why its 1984 of course by George Orwell.
    
    Well it really is a case of our politicians allowing political correctness to get out of hand. It has become a useful tool for them. Someone starts asking awkward questions about water supply, sustainability, overpopulation, immigration, etc just trot out political correctness to shut them up. What's more, you can get high school, university and college kids on side who have been indoctrinated into blindly following the political correctness trail. You want an important issue not to see the light of day? Use political correctness. We are made so sensitive to the needs of others that we forget our own needs. By the time it dawns on us that our needs and their needs are the same the power brokers have some other shiny new bauble to dangle before us.
    
    Kathryn1000 if you are a politician who has been making a nice living supporting political correctness or a teacher of any stripe without any street smarts whatsoever of course it hasn't gotten out of hand and never will. We can always blame bad things happening on other things. Talk straight and honest and we might actually solve problems. But that is not the way of political correctness.
