How can you teach your children the value of education?

Education is valuable in the sense that it is one way to have a good and high paying job. This is very important for the children's future. In the world today where children are mostly distracted by new technology which brings new activities for them,  how can you instill the value of education to them?

Have them learn on their new technology. I think with kids.  Having them learn in ways they understand, or being creative that they don't really realize it. Then one day, they realize they actually know something and it all came about by education..

By showing them certain people without education. My mom always said people who lived in mobile homes were not very educated. So I always did my best in school so I would be able to afford a real house. (Now it's my dream to live on a boat as well.) But of course, as a child, I needed proof of what my mother said. I've always doubted everyone. So I observed the only family I knew who lived in a mobile home. They had fights, they got divorced many times, the daughter deserved jail a time or two and got it, the son was full of testosterone and beer with little else. So I considered my mother's comments to be true and studied even more.

It depends on the age. It doesn't do much good to show a 5-year-old statistics showing that a person's earning potential increases in proportion to their education, but that might help with a teen deciding whether or not to go to college.

I think the best way is by example. For some parents, it might be too late to get an education (you might have dropped out, not finished college, etc.) so in that case, you could say something like "I dropped out of high school and the best job I could manage is cleaning highway rest stops." Also, just because you might not have gotten much education doesn't mean you don't value it. If your children see you reading, watching educational TV or bettering yourself in other ways, they pick up on that and follow your example.

Another tactic, especially with kids glued to the computer or video games, is to remind them that the people who made those things possible were had good educations.

Short answer: show them the evidence; lead by example.

For me it was going back to school. My husband and I almost divorced and I realized I had no way to support my children.  I can not really afford it, but it is something I had to do. Now that they see me at my age in school, they are discovering it is easier to get that education and do it when you are young.
