Remember Stockton-on-Tees, where the first public railway terminated (opened in September 1825)? See how many more you can find around the globe in English-speaking countries.

Central California has a Stockton.  Not a particularly pretty place as I recall.

Stockton-on-Tees near where I used to live isn't much to write home about either, but it's got some good buildings with Georgian character on the Market Square. We have about eight of them in England. Keep digging, and keep on trucking!

Stockton, New Jersey, USA is a charming, historic small town on the Delaware River. The old Stockton Inn is a popular lodging and dining establishment, a convenient and comfortable place to use as a base for spending a few days touring this richly historical part of the country.

Sounds a nice place to visit one day. Did Georgie Washington stop off there before re-taking New York from the redcoats?

What a great question, alancaster149. It seems as though Washington slept everywhere in Pennsylvania and New Jersey during his campaigns. It's kind of a local joke. Who knows what he did?

Less said, eh? (nudge, nudge, wink, wink, says he, knowingly). We'll have to get off this line of thought before it takes a 'Pythonesque' turn.

Erm, Stockton in Cheshire, Norfolk, Warwickshire, give up.

BTW that is Stockton in Cheshire and not Stockport.

How about Stockton-on-the-forest north of York? There are about eight others around the country including a Stockton Heath in Cheshire. Is that the one you meant? (Where's that Q8 Road Atlas?)

Mm, no, that's two Stockton's in Cheshire then! Stockton on Teme? But now I'm starting to cheat!
