   Is this Cruise telling us that he has nothing to hide and wants to open and honest about his life and beliefs?  Is it publicity?  I am going to have to check the link Kumar provided.  It's sad to hear of their divorce.

      Jumped the gun with this question. Katie was the one that wanted an open divorce hearing...I think it was to expose scientoloty. Tom made a fast settlement probably to protect scientology.

   It’s clear that she was afraid of the Church of Scientology; why else would she plan it out so carefully? Katie had to have some help, though; her dad is a high-powered divorce lawyer who probably saw this coming.    Typically the United States Court system allows trials to be public.  This is what keeps government honest.  It stops government from abusing our rights or treating people unfairly.  It is suppose to make the court system more open and transparent. 
   
   The only time when trials are not public is when it is believed that a public trial will prevent one side or the other from getting a fair trial.  This happens sometimes in high profile cases where the judge believes the public will interfere with the trial and try to influence jurors.

      I would like to add that it is also possible for part of the case to be public and part of the case to be private.  If both parties involved ask for the case to be private it is possible that the judge could order the documents filed to be sealed.

   The possibility of opening Tom and Katie's divorce trial to the public is not only an unrealistic proposal, but also a quite indecent one. Tom and Katie's divorce is a private matter and it should remain private. We are talking about a little girl here - Suri - which found herself thrown into the disorienting war zone of a custody battle; so what would make things worse, would be to have to go through this pain in front of a sensation-hungry crowd. Yes, some are free to speculate that it would be fascinating to catch a glimpse of the truths Tom was so eager to hide from the public eye, but the argument remains standing... this is personal, relational fracture and it's privacy should be respected, no matter who you are.
