   Do you know someone who uses the word like in just about every sentence?
   
   They say this is a sign of not having much else upstairs.....I think it's just the way people speak these days!

   Regrettably I do know several people who punctuate their sentences with like - I'm like crossing the road and this bloke like comes up to me like, and I'm like smiling at him.
   
   Well, no, I don't like!  But it does seem to have crept into the English language.  With any luck it will creep out again during my life time. And - no, one might think that it is indicative of low intelligence, but I frequently hear it from people who should know better!

   In the seven years in Texas, I was forced to go to church twice a week and sit next to another student who used the word like in every sentence. Since then, my partner and I went to a dinner at a restaurant and he had to sit next to her. We left early because it is one of his pet peeves and he was so irritated and frustrated. We still tease each other about her "like"ness.

   ....you mean like when they are trying to answer this question without like repeating themselves and like you just get the awful idea like they don't know what they're talking about.

   My experience is that most of the people who do it have gotten to the point where they don't even recognize that they do.  I have been known on occasion been known to mention it to someone politely and with a certain kindness an have noticed how they struggle to remove the word from their sentences.  I will tell you that I know of a few speaking faux pas which bothered me more.  Usually that little bit of ignomy is merely a matter of awareness.

   Yes! In regular speech it's comical....but in writing sometimes its done for effect.  I repeated the phrase ...President Barack Obama....in my Response To Adolph Reed Jr. simply to piss him off!!

   Oh this is funny because I used to be just the person you are referring to.  My family actually made fun of how much I interjected the word like into my speech when I was in high school.  I don’t know what it was.  I think it was just a way of speaking that became familiar to me, sort of similar to slang, and I just began using it.  Along those same lines when my best friend moved to Dallas she picked up saying y’all.  Well since I talked to her quite frequently, for a while there I could also be known to throw out a y’all in conversation.  I am happy to report however that I no longer use the word like as my every fifth word as I used to - probably just something I had to outgrow.

   Honestly I do know many that use the word "like" constantly and actually some of them are truly smart.

    Not as much now that I'm older. In High School though I had a girl in one of my classes say Like 46 times while sharing a summary of what her book was about.

    My nieces used to do this and they have plenty upstairs. One is a university graduate with a career in medicine and the other is in her final year at university. Needless to say I am proud of my nieces.

    In this day and age there are people that seem to thrive on saying the 'like' word. In my opinion, it's just that some people think they look and sound cool when they say 'like' in every sentence.

    My 50 something mother uses the word like in almost every sentence, sometimes multiple times. This may quite possibly the most annoying habit ever.

    I agree its the way people speak, a lot of the younger people say it here where I live. For some its a bit like a tic, and they don't even realise they're saying it.

    The first one who comes to my mind is Shaggy in the Scooby Doo cartoons.  "Like WOW, man" and so on.  He is supposed to look a little "vacant" because the dog and Freddie solve most of the mysteries, with the expert help of brainy Daphne.
    
    "Like" is also like "as if".  In college everyone said that, which was probably a trend that has now swung back to "like".  For example if someone asked "do you like that guy" the answer "As If!" worked nicely.  Go figure...

    It's like what to answer questions like this? or what it feels like getting votes up? It's fun hearing younger people and children speaking this way telling us about how they're feeling or what they find a particular thing is about. Just like this and that : Thanks rutley. Nice question.

    I don't hear it as often these days, but I do hear "ahm" a lot more.  I heard a professional speaker mention it 15 times during her opening speech the other day.

       I also have heard a professional speaker do this.  I found I was not listening to what he said, I was jotting down how many times he did this. Glad I didn't have to pay to hear all that because I would not have been happy!
