Is there a book that you didn't like when forced to read it in school, but you later enjoyed?
Do you think you liked it because you had matured or because you weren't being forced to "analyze" it?
Yes; all of them from Beowulf to Great Expectations. I didn't really grow a brain until I was about 26.
I pre read a couple of books for my literature this class this next semester. And I enjoyed them a lot because I was actually able to take my time with them.
There are several other books I had to read for a class that I intend to re-read so that I can actually enjoy them.
I didn't care for F. Scott Fitgerald's "The Great Gatsby" when it was required reading in high school, but I had to re-read it for a literature course in college and enjoyed it the second time around.
I had a similar experience with various works of Shakespeare - I couldn't stand'em in high school, but upon re-reading some of the plays in college I found that they suddenly "clicked" with me.
I chalk it up to having better instructors in college...
Even before I looked at some of the answers, I instantly thought of The Great Gatsby (apparently FatFreddysCat and I are in agreement). I read it once in AP Lit in high school and hated it. I read it again the next year for regular Lit class and enjoyed it a little more. Now I read it for fun, and I LOVE it. And I'm thrilled about the upcoming movie.
Thanks to everyone for their answers. I, too, gained an appreciation for Shaekespeare later in life. As for "The Great Gatsby", I can appreciate it as a classic work, but I can't say that I enjoyed it.

What books did you read as a child between the ages of ten and fifteen?I know there are probably a few Hubbers who were born before 1950, and was wondering what books they read as kids. I'm thinking about a Hub along these lines highlighting some I read and still remember names and titles, even...

Should high schoolers be able to choose core classes based on a choice of future career?Sophomores and upper classmen only though... they already have prep-classes that you can choose, but is that enough. Kids with 4.0's through high school bust their butts on learning useless information (like why...
