   How do you feel seeing your closest friend promoting to a higher position than you are in?

   If my friend deserves it and has put in the work, then I'd be delighted for them.  But I think, if I'm being honest with myself, that if they didn't deserve it and still got it, I'd probably be pretty annoyed for a while. 
   The one thing you have to remember is not to take it out on the friend.  It's not exactly their decision but they took it because of the benfits.   I know if I was offered a promotion, I'd take it!

   I am fine with my best or closest friend achieving a higher position than me. However, it would depend upon the reason they achieved the position.

   Cookie? Personally they work harder than me, odds are they're more friendly than me. I can totally see why they got the position over me. I'd be happy for them. "Man, you know how Kiss that _____ like no one else! Good job!"

   That feels good because it means I am friends with someone powerful. They may help me up the chain as well.

   Lucky that it's my good friend and he/she will not only look out for me but help me improve so that I can do the same. And of course I'll get a pinch of jealousy but it's only natural and not spiteful.

   Joyful. I chose this in high school, when I had a choice of being first in my class, or taking a class that was challenging for me. I chose to take the class, learn more, get a lower grade, and let my friend be first in the class. He had expected it when he was in 9th and 10th grades. I came to the school in 11th grade, and he had competition. It meant more to him than to me. And learning all I could made a lot to me. So we both won.
   
   Being joyful when others are joyful is called "mudita" in the Buddhist tradition. Feeling bitter or bad when others succeed is called "Sour grapes" (from a story by Aesop, The Fox and the Grapes) or, in German Shadenfreund.

   I'm Ok with my closest friend being promoted. Being my closest friend, it means I'll have a better friend who I could learn from or ask for support. In addition, my closest friend and I have different purposes to fulfill, so I'd work concentrate on my purpose and run my race.
