I always thought that it was chemistry with a mystical twist.
In a nutshell, alchemy was chemistry applied to spiritual questions and magical matters. Alchemists tried to concoct magic elixirs, make precious metals out of common materials, etc. Their methods gradually developed into a real science free of mysticism. So yes, it is sort of the precursor to the modern science of chemistry -- and physics as well.

Considering that gold is being created biochemically now as a biproduct of microbial activity (I've got a microbiologist for a friend that keeps me posted) I'd have to say yes.
