   Do you think it's true that cats know when a person is about to die?
   
   I just saw a 20/20 episode where it was said that this was a fact.

   Cats may have psychic powers and since I am a cat lover I would say yes they do. However, I do not know if they are clairvoyant enough to know if someone is going to die.
   
   My question to you would be---have you witnessed this telepathic phenomenal?
   
   If your answer is yes---then how does a cat behave so one could identify what was occurring?

   Either dogs or cats do I believe.  Not necessarily because they are psychic but rather that the body changes odor on a level we cannot sense. But animals have such an acute sense of smell, they are aware of these changes as things begin to shut down in the human body.
   
   but..I also believe animals can know things on a level awareness that could be called psychic.

   They can certainly be very intuitive. My cat, Phoebe is very protective of me and all my cats (Yes, I am a crazy cat lady!) seem to be very in sync with the emotions/atmosphere in our home. I would mostly call it love and loyalty between cats/dogs and their owners. I would imagine it is because of the bond we have with them and probably because most of us treat our pets with unconditional love. We accept things from our pets that we wouldn't in anyone else.  As a result of this, we receive it in return.

   I think this is one of those things that one wants to believe, but there just isn't enough definitive science on the subject.  I didn't see the 20/20 episode but I read the magazine article about the nursing home cat that visited residents hours before their deaths.
   
   There's some compelling theory, especially about the "smell of death" that we can't detect but that cats likely can.  I should think that dogs would be able to detect the same odors.
   
   It just seems to me that, since cats are common nursing home residents all across the country, that if it were true, we'd hear many more similar reports. 
   
   We'd probably also hear about a sudden rash of mysterious nursing home cat disappearances.

   maybe sometimes, but i don't know if this happens all the time. your common sense should tell you that this is bound to happen, that once, somewhere in the world, you will find a cat like this.
