    Since there has only been (one date) there is no commitment or anything close to one, simply tell him;
    "I feel it would be a waste of both of our time for us to go out again. I wish you well."

    I would be polite but direct.  Thank you for the evening, but I just don't think this is going to work out.  If he persists - repeat.

    I have only been on "one and done" date before, and that was because she was trying to make an old flame jealous.

    When I approached her for the second date, she casually said, "Thank you for the flowers, but I think we should just be friends". I thought she was a classy little gal and handled herself well, and since I percieved the situation accurately, there were no hard feelings.
