Would you object to your teen ages 13-21 being screened for emotionally instability?

Teenagers are notoriously unstable, emotional, fickle and sometimes down right crazy. I've raised 3 girls and some days, weeks, years I just wanted to lock them away for a few years. But when my child threatened suicide I took action and got her help immediately. But in order to have adequate screening school officials; including teachers, nurses and guidance counselors as well as doctors and nurses would need special training to help us, help our children. Who pays isn't the question. Friday proved we all pay one way or another.

On the surface it would make sense to have some kind of screening process.

But, we have to look deeper and it raises more questions. Who would screen, how would they be trained, what standard for instability would be used? Would it cause the child stigma?  What if the screening process is wrong or done incorrectly, could it affect the child on a permanent basis?  And so on...

I think our best bet is good parenting and good educators. Even so, many children will fall through the cracks - and that is a sad fact.

We already have good parents & good educators. Not 100% but enough that we can see we need more to solve this. I'm seeking an open discussion on suggestions. Your points are so valid. Dee

We have do have good parents and good educators but as you say, not 100% and I might even have to say not 75% or ....?  I worked for a therapist for years and it was so disheartening to see what passes for parenting these days.

Teachers pass notes re: each child's behavior to the next. Tabula rasa the epistemological theory that children are born without built-in mental content infers knowledge comes from experience, perception and can be poorly set by unwitting.

Absolutely I would not only object to that, but make a formal complaint against the school! The problem with that is not only that it is an unwarranted invasion into the family but also a potential hindrance to the future of all youngsters. Although Psychology has somehow become well respected in your mind, it has for centuries been thought of as poppy cot. Do you really want a dolt to ruin any chance your child has for a good future by making a misdiagnosis? This happens more often than you know. I sure don't want my child placed into that type of a situation. Children who are violent don't just happen, they have been that way for years. Hostile and violence behavior is manifested. He probably killed and injured his pets, shot birds or pelted them with rocks.  He was the typical bully in school taking unresolved anger out of others who were unable to stand up to him. Lack of common sense aside, do you actually want one insane moment in a mentally disturbed young mans life to destroy the life choices of many? Doing that is like tossing an ocean on a lit matchstick to put it out!  Fahrenheit 451 is coming to pass..a grim alternate-future setting ruled by a tyrannical government where firemen start fires to prevent knowledge specifically in homes where the most evil of evils: books are. So now we begin using psycho-psychology on our poor defenseless children placing them under a psycho-microscope, just because.. I would rather see all children stay at home learning using a computer than have this type of hyper-psycho-vision thrust upon them!

I realized after my comment I didn't include that I feel it's a family responsibility. The schools are the backup. We as parents are responsible for our children. Irregardless of neg feelings about the science a hands on parent knows.

When I was a school teacher it always disturbed me that negative comments followed a child from year to year. An introduction to next teacher is in some cases damaged by these notes. Tabula rasa true; children need opportunity not predisposition.
