Why is science, especially The Theory of Evolution, such a threat to religious faith?

Unless you take a really interpretive view of the religious doctrines associated with the religious faith, then yes, science nullifies religious faith.

When the world around us works so heavily based on science, there is no space for "just believing".

My belief that I share with some, science can coexist with faith.  However, as you said, the faithful fear that science "nulifies" faith.  If anything, should science affirm faith?

Faith is inherently based upon ignoring reason - why would you need faith if you knew better? That is why science is said to be incompatible with religious faith.

YOu answer is becoming more understandable to me.  Faith lacks reason and our Creator had given us reason.  Is Faith an invention of man then since reasoning takes effort whereas faith does not?

Phil, you miss the fact that creation is superior to science. Science studies the products of creation. Ignoring "reason" is exactly how Edison got as far as he did. He was "unreasonable." Thank goodness for that! We have the lightbulb!

It threatens faith because it is a threat to the long-held religious theory on how the earth, sky, humans, and animals were created. Once one accepts that organisms evolved and continue to evolve and that the universe began 14 Billion years ago from a singularity, the entire theology on original sin, paradise, and god's role in the world collapses.

You've reiterated my original question  I don't see you see faith "collapsing."  I'd like to know why evolution is a threat and cannot coincide with religious faith.

No I didn't. I said the reason it can't coincide is because it DISPROVES the basis of the theology. If it disproves this basis of the theology, it is a threat to it. That is why it is a threat.

    Simple answer: It isn't!

Evolution and other aspects of science are only a threat to ego.

Just like "Clovis first" was a threat to the ego of scientists who could not believe that anything of anthropological value would ever be found below the Clovis horizon. The only thing maverick scientists threatened were the egos of the scientists who held Clovis first dogma as unassailable "Truth."

As a Christian and a scientist, I have faith and also believe in evolution.

Logic demands that we take science more seriously than most Christian Fundamentalists are willing to do.

Science tells us, for instance, that humans have been around for at least 200,000 years. A literal interpretation of Genesis leads to the wrong age for humanity.

The fact that galaxies have been colliding for hundreds of millions of years also contradicts a literal Genesis.

What many Christians fail to realize is that these things contradict NOT THE BIBLE, but their INTERPRETATION of the Bible. This is then a matter of ego.

The one doing the interpretation is wrong and that hurts the ego, despite what they may claim about science "attacking" the Bible. The Bible is quite safe.

In fact, I've found a timeline in Genesis that is very compatible with those of science. And the new date for Noah's Flood gives us the culprit's identity from timelines in science. The Flood, it turns out, was an act of love, because God cares little for Homo sapiens. These human bodies are only temporary tools for his lost children

I have scanned and plan to read some of your hub based on your answer. I see where you stand on the subject. I find your answer plausible and reasonable.  The human ego is a formitable foe at times, isn't it?

It is a threat only in the minds of those who hold literal interpretations of the bible. There is no reason why evolution should be a threat to faith in our Father in Heaven. Evolution is only a threat to manmade doctrines.

Agreed.  However, the Faithful can never really give me a clear answer to this questions.  Just by asking it, they say I'm attacking and insulting their faith.

It's not a threat to faith in Jesus Christ but it most certainly is a threat to "religious faith".
Religion has to do with the study of God but lacking personal revelation and relationship with a living God.
Evolution is in itself a religion. Evolution is a theory based upon inconclusive, unrelated and impossible processes.
Evolution requires way more faith to believe than it requires to believe in Jesus Christ.
