I think Congregational Pork Bills are Blackmail and they need to be stopped. What do you think?
I Heard this morning on the news, that the Bill that will provide financial assistance for Sandy storm victims is being held up because of Pork added to the Bill. This happens because some legislatures want financial favors for projects in their state before they will vote for a Bill. The writers of the Bill end up approving in order to get the votes to approve it and allow the favor project to be added to the end of their Bill. If other members of Congress disagree with the additional pork the Bill goes into debate.
Particularly in the case of aiding storm victims, adding pork is a horrific and selfish idea. Sandy victims have been complaining just as Katrina victims did that they were not being helped. Congress does what they choose, many of them ignore the fact that their jobs are to work for the best interests of the people. Their purpose is not to get as many projects and dollars approved for their own interests. The realist in me doesn't see a change forthcoming though. Sickening.
Each bill presented for a vote in Congress should be a stand alone bill without anything directly associated with the core bill. No law should be passed that contains "pork" and no bill should even be presented to Congress that is not within the limited confines of the Constitution and more narrowly defined in the 10th Amendment.
The 9th and 10th Amendments were repealed. I don't know when, but it must have happened at some point. After all, the entire government routinely ignores both and has for as long as I can remember.
They do treat them as if they were, don't they...among others...
It has been a long time since I read the U.S. Constition, so I can't speak authoritatively on this. If it is not unconstitutional to include pork in a bill, then it should be. I know that in my state it is unconstitional to include more than one subject in a bill, but the legs. do it all the time. We just have to wait until someone challenges in court. I suggest that citizens do this with federal pork bills.

Paul Krugman's column in the NYTimes today 1-5-08 is entitled "Fighting Off Depression." In it he called the recent economic numbers "terrifying," not just in the U.S. but around the world. Manufacturing in particular is plunging everywhere; banks aren't lending; businesses and...

Or should they just be voted on and made into law and "fixed" later.Maybe this is the new Government Paradigm.Make laws that only a select few are privy too... then just fix them later. That's an interesting plan.
