   Was God okay with people beating other people? Exodus 21:20-21

   King James Version (KJV)
   
   20 And if a man smite his servant, or his maid, with a rod, and he die under his hand; he shall be surely punished.
   
   21 Notwithstanding, if he continue a day or two, he shall not be punished: for he is his money.
   
   What are your thoughts?

   Well I researched the meaning behind this and I think what God is trying to tell us, if someone is beaten (in this case, slave/servant) that person must be punished. However if he gets back up to continue the work, there will not be any punishment as this is the work of the servant. If the servant is ok with it than obviously this is clearly not an act that needed to be punished.
   
   those days were different than it is today and I am sure God is up to the times of today, I mean after all he created the world and knows exactly what is going to happen.
   
   There is a lot of controversy scriptures for some (not me) in the bible that seems to make it ok to do certain things such as sacrifice and animal. However what I think people do not realize (and watching the bible series on the history channel is a good example of Gods punishment) that God is just and wishes us all to repent,, however he does not leave the guilty unpunished.
   
   What most do not want to admit is to his wrath, and God is not to be question. He can do whatever he wants. He does not need are ok nor does he do something and think he made a mistake after the fact. Whatever he does is justified.
   
   Pharaoh was given many chances to repent and set the people free, however he refused 3 times and all times God set forth punishment. The last no God warned he would take the first born son. He did just that. He brought this punishment on himself. Actually God showed mercy, the plagues and the bugs he first set on Pharaoh was not to take his life when indeed he had every right to do this. It came to pass and yet Pharaoh wanted to prove that he actually was higher than God or actually had the nerve to say he was a god.
   
   God says .....there will be no other gods before me and he warns.......vengeance is mine I will repay.
   
   Just my opinion.

   I don't think God is happy with people beating other people, .. He want them to live in harmony. Everyone is equal in the sight of God. It is only when we commit sin that we are to be punished. I believe that is the reason why God is showing us the right way so that we'll be able to escape the punishment, and at the same time to live in harmony with each other.
   
   Just my opinion!..

   The proper translation should read "slave" not servant.  Historically speaking, slaves had one primary objective: to please the master in everything through their loyal obedience to him.  In return, slaves could look forward to receiving freedom one day, protection, food, a roof over their head and even a limited amount of social affluence based on the status of his master.
   
   Israelites could sell themselves into debt slavery due to financial insolvency, but they were to be treated as hired servants under the Mosiac law (Lev 25:35-43).  Non-Jewish slaves were merely considered property (Lev 25:44-46).
   
   Since there were no prisons in that day, a master had to keep his slaves in line when they disobeyed or did evil things.  The punishment was always to fit the crime.  Masters who were evil and beat their servants regardless will still be held accountable to Christ upon their deaths as everyone will be on judgement day regardless of the sentence they received for the harsh treatment of their slaves.
   
   Remember, God also was ok with parents striking their children.  For no reason? No, but as punishment for disobedience and to deter children from doing further evil for their own good.
