I believe "gold diggers" are here to stay. They're actually in demand especially for very successful men who are either "unattractive, overweight, or old". Most men in America are raised with the belief that if the become "successful enough" they can have any woman they want.
A lot of women have heard or been told that men will pay their bills if they are "hot" looking. I've known women who proclaim that when they were doing the nightclub scene in the 80's they (never) had to buy their own drinks! There's no shortage of men willing to (pay) to have the "company" beautiful women. Some men will set up a mistress in her own condo, provide her money monthly for clothes, food, along with a car and fly her places to meet them. Of course these women don't realize there is an "expiration date" on this arrangement.
Last but not least every (father) wants his daughter to marry a guy that has "something" going for himself. Essentially he wants her to marry the most successful man she can attract. Don't bring home the waiter from Chili's and announce your wedding plans. :-)

Of course, a smart woman dates and/or marries a highly successful man socioeconomically.  I am ALL FOR that.  However.......yes, there is a however, the woman has to bring something to the table whether it is educationally and/or socioeconomically.

I think they are rarer than anyone thinks they are. They really are a minority of a minority of a small subgroup in our society. Even then, a small precentage really gets full access to their spouse's fortune. For example, John McCain was a gold digger even though he didn't really get to control his wife's assets.

Some women are attracted to wealthy men, for the simple fact they represent power.  With that being said, men have much to say about how this whole thing plays out.  Many men will leave their wives of many years for a younger woman.  Trading in, or trading up it's the American way.  If it sounds like I have no confidence in human behavior, you'd be reading this right.  Gold diggers will always be here, we used to call them whores, but as it goes, when you lay down with dogs, you get up with fleas.  Men who believe they would ever be "loved" by these woman, get a reality check when the well runs dry.  Sorry about their luck, LOL.
