   I would suggest fear. Everyone who is afraid divides the world into "us" and "them." When afraid, we seek power, thinking it will make us safe. If we've been hurt, and are still afraid, and get power, we become angry and seek revenge. When this happens on a national level, the nation maintains power and attacks its perceived enemies. If those enemies are individuals or small groups who are themselves afraid, hurt, angry, and seeking revenge, then they are terrorists.
   
   Terrorists use the power they have to terrify people, creating more fear. Governments use the power they have to terrify enemies, creating more fear.
   
   From that point on, the cycle feeds itself.
   
   One who chooses not to be afraid cannot be terrorized. One who chooses to love his or her neighbor and his or her enemy does not terrify others. When we all do this, we will share in the love that frees us from fear, and the greatest power of all, which is peace.

   I think Sid hit the nail on the head. It's fear. And often unfounded fear whipped up by the media and the state.
   
   But I also think we have never evolved from the ancient tribes. People are incredibly cruel to others just because they are different.

      I agree with both your added points. Government and media fuel the flames. And the habit of thinking we are members of separate tribes, which is called pseudospeciation, is at the root of the problem.

   Mostly greed & envy ruin the party.
   Closely followed by the obsession to have dominion over others, I suppose that falls under power.

   Don't underestimate Geography. All cultural, political, and ethnic distinctions arose due to people originating in different climates and therefore becoming exposed to different feedback loops. Most of these are absorbed genetically and then carried into new climates.
   
   New climates act on the old state to bring about a very slow evolution, but also produce a sense of alienation and irreconcilability on the part of the individual.
