Who is your top NFL quarterback of all time?

Everybody has a preference.  Debates go on.  Yet the answers continue to differ.  So who do you think is the greatest NFL quarterback in the history of American football?

What a great question. I'm an 80s kid and I had the privilege to watch Joe Montana, John Elway, and Dan Marino. From the 90s on, I saw Brett Favre, Troy Aikman, Kurt Warner, Tom Brady, Drew Brees, and Peyton Manning. Of all those greats, I will pick Joe Montana as the greatest of all time. Several of these men had more physical gifts but when it came to excellence and performing when it mattered most, Montana comes out on top.

You really can't argue that choice.  He understood the value of the position and what the responsibility was, and he executed brilliantly.  Personally I think Elway was a better athlete and every bit as clutch, but Montana did beat him.

I agree. I almost chose Elway. It's all opinion but I've seen some people pick Marino over Elway. I guess they're looking mostly at stats.

For some it's stats, for others it's championships, and for still others it's athletic ability.  There truly is no one right answer.

I like Sonny Jurgensen.  He was prolific passer on a lousy team.  Let's not forget that it's a team game and winners are always blessed with talent around them.  But let's not discount success totally.  To me, more than winning, or part of winning, is the ability to lead a team from behind, which is credited to the quarterback more than any other position.  For Jurgensen, he engaged in a series of memorable shootouts with Dallas's Don Meredith during the 1960s, the first great games of one of the greatest rivalries.  And don't forget Jurgensen was a textbook perfect pocket passer.  While playing for the 1960s-era Redskins, who never won more than seven games in a season during the era, he led the NFL in passing yards in 1966, '67, and '69.  He came to Washington from Philadelphia, where he enjoyed team success on a 10-win team in 1961 when he led the league in touchdown passes and yards per game.  By the time the Redskins made the playoffs in 1971, their first postseason appearance in more than 25 years, Jurgensen had been demoted to second string, although in 1974, at age 40, he started four games and led Washington to a 17-point fourth quarter in a memorable 20-17 comeback win against Miami.

I always wonder what would've happened if he'd had more time with Vince Lombardi.  He always said it would've been cheating.  Perhaps the Redskins would've won a couple Super Bowl during that time instead of when Gibbs showed up.
