What is one subject you love now that you hated in school?
I confess that I didn't have a proper appreciation of science during my school days. Now I'm suddenly a big fan, learning new things when possible. Do you have a particular subject you despised but came to realize was more interesting than expected?
I hated history; I dropped it in year 9 (age 13), explaining to my parents that there was no point in trying to study what had happened. Life, I decided, was all about the here and now.
Then, when I began my A levels I thought I'd try out Classical Civilisations as my fourth subject. I meant to drop it after one year to focus on the other three.
Somehow that plan changed and now I'm doing a BA in Ancient History (and considering post-grad education on the subject too!).
I'm not sure this counts since I did decide I liked it again while I was still at school - but only in my last couple of years!
Anybody who develops an appreciation for history is okay in my book.
Didnt care about Geography or History and an avid fan of both now, love maps and globes and researching other countries and cultures, also love ancient Rome, Egypt and Asian culture past and present, and yes that includes Russia and India :0) I was really into smoking bowls and girls in high school. What can I say?
Then you are my new best friend. Am a huge fan of both.
I've loved science and mathematics all my life. But I loathed history through most of school.
Then, in 11th grade, I met Mrs. Hendry. She had grown up in China. She looked like an elder Ingrid Bergman. And she told us that she would rarely test us on dates. Dates are still important, but far more critical to understanding history is "motivation." I was hooked.
I have always loved maps, though. Particularly the 3D kind. In fact, I created a 3D map of our galactic vicinity -- "Stars in the NeighborHood" software.
Chinese history is something I've striven to learn more about, and I'm in agreement that dates are less important than what happened. Map reading is a favorite activity of mine as well.
I hated mathematics during my school days. I used to think that it is too difficult to understand and never tried to learn it. But later in life I met with a friend who was very good at mathematics and compelled me to learn it. He found time to teach me even the small details I had missed during my school time. Soon I came to realize that how easy, useful and interesting was the subject. Now I do admit that Mathematics is my favourite subject.
I envy you, Lens. Math remains a subject of bitter disappointment for me.
That would have to be Psychology. I could not stand it in college, but I find myself now very intrigued by it.
You have a lot in common with my father then. He is the exact same way. Despised it in college and now reads up on it all the time.
I'd say science as well. In school, I thought it was so boring. When you think about if, science is almost involved in everything we do. Even how our brain functions, how cars operate, and of course Earth is all science related.
What changed it for me was the show Big Bang Theory. Through all the laughter I started getting interested in some of the stuff they talked about. So I researched. It's such a broad, fascinating subject.
